The Kitikmeot Heritage Society is made up of Elders and other residents of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. Its purpose is to collect and archive oral histories of the Elders; to preserve archaeological sites through oral history archaeological study; to promote and preserve the Inuinnaqtun and Inuktitut languages; and to develop education and learning materials, promoting and celebrating the cultures and traditions of the people.
In August of 1998, the local library burnt to the ground. Along with the books, archives and documented oral histories went the heart of the community. The Kitikmeot Heritage Society, in partnership with the library, high school and District Education Authority, has worked to crate a new, fully integrated cultural centre and library within the new high school. Here students, younger children, parents and grandparents can exchange ideas, skills knowledge and values to reflect traditional society and meet contemporary needs. Important cultural artifacts and information from the Iqaluktuuq site will also be displayed.
