The Uqqurmiut Centre for Arts and Crafts is the cultural centre for the people of Pangnirtung, who produce a distinguished collection of prints, drawings and tapestries. The collection of the Uqqurmiut Centre represents the work of more than 30 artists , ranging from Elders who have passed away to younger artists who are active in the shop today. The mission of the Centre is:
"To serve the artists of Pangnirtung and the community of Pangnirtung to keep their arts and crafts alive, and to ensure their full participation and control, by creating employment and training opportunities for artists, providing a central place for creating and marketing art, by contributing to local tourism and by providing an art archive to preserve the art for future generations".
Pangnirtung's weaving studio was established by the then Government of the Northwest Territories in 1970. Printmaking was added in 1973, under the auspices of the Arctic Cooperatives Limited. In 1988, the Uqqurmiut Inuit Artists Association was formed, assuming responsibility for representing and promoting arts and crafts in Pangnirtung. |
