(Эта страница еще не переведена на русский язык) The Arctic Circumpolar Route (ACR) is a network of pathways through eight circumpolar countries [Canada, U.S.A. (Alaska), Greenland (Denmark), Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Russia] by which world cultures have timelessly interacted. This is a long-term, holistic research project, sponsored by UNESCO, in keeping with its mission “to contribute to peace and security by promoting collaboration among the nations through education, science and culture … without distinction of race, sex, language or religion.” Global awareness of Arctic peoples is being developed through a wide access to information which is digitized and managed electronically; and which conserves, enhances, and leaves in place local resources valued by their stewards and community members. The ACR recognizes the integrity of environmental, social, cultural and economic factors in Arctic peoples’ lifeways. A sophisticated balance has traditionally been struck between man and nature over the 4,000 years of habitation in this fragile area, defining sustainability. Many tangible and intangible resources, however, have been removed from the Arctic by outsiders. Conversely, the ACR encourages consultation of Arctic residents, and conservation of valuable resources in their place of origin and in the care of those who are most directly affected and interested. Projects are chosen to represent subjects important to Arctic communities, which illustrate and support traditional knowledge and practices. These are “adopted” by the ACR, fostering partnerships between North and South. Each partnership presents a significant aspect of the ACR’s electronically-managed information program, incrementally leading to a more integrated and comprehensive understanding of the Circumpolar world. The purpose of the Route is to strengthen the natural bonds around the circumpolar area, to maintain dialogue with Arctic community stakeholders, and to bring shared interests into sharper focus. The ACR bridges the gap between research and policy, providing leadership in increased Arctic participation in the global context. Financial and technical strengths of the more populous South are coordinated with the development of Northern-driven solutions which respect traditional pursuits and ways of life |
